What to carry to every wedding function, from mehendi to reception

Four functions, four moods, and the question every guest asks the night before: which bag? A function-by-function guide.

Gold Dramour Crystal Kiss-Lock Clutch

An Indian wedding is not one event. It is three days, four outfits and a family WhatsApp group that changes the dress code twice. The bag is usually the last thing anyone thinks about, and the first thing in every photo where you are holding a plate, a glass or a cousin's hand. Here is what works at each function, and why.

Mehendi and haldi: hands free, colours light

Daytime, often outdoors, and you will sit for hours while the mehendi dries or try to stay out of the way of the haldi. You want something small that sits across the body, so your hands stay free, in a shade that goes with yellows, greens and pinks.

Sangeet: something that moves with you

The night everybody dances. Choose a bag on a chain, so it can go on your shoulder when the dhol starts, and choose something that catches the light, because sangeet lighting is low and warm.

The wedding: let the outfit lead

Lehengas and heavy silks already carry a lot of work, so pick one metal and repeat it. Gold goes with gold jewellery and zari; champagne and silver go with kundan, polki and pastels. A frame clutch with a short handle is the easiest thing to hold through the ceremony and the photographs.

Reception: structure and shine

Reception looks are sharper — gowns, pre-draped sarees, Indo-western cuts — so a structured bag reads better than a soft pouch, and it keeps its line in photographs.

What to pack in a wedding clutch

Phone, lipstick, a compact, two safety pins, a small comb and a little cash for the shagun. Check what fits before you leave: the Crystal Egg Clutch takes a lipstick, a compact and keys but not a phone, while the Minaudière, the Box Clutch and the Kiss-Lock all take a 6.7-inch phone. Every product page lists exactly what fits.

Gifting the bridesmaids

A clutch in each bridesmaid's outfit colour is a thank-you that gets carried to every wedding after this one. The Shaadi Season edit has gold, champagne, silver, white and peach to match most colour stories.
